Salvation Equation
There is an equation (a very simple equation!) that will clear up all confusion over Bible verses about salvation. The equation is called “The Salvation Equation”, and it reveals that salvation is a dichotomous issue, meaning “having two parts”. Each part is equally important and absolutely necessary for a person to obtain salvation (eternal life). One part is your part and the other part is God’s part. Therefore, the equation looks like this:

A (Your Part) + B (God’s Part) = C (Eternal Life)
Note: In the equation, “A” is some number greater than zero, and “B” is some number greater than zero. It looks like this in math symbols: A > 0, B >0. Therefore, “A” will never equal “C” ALONE, nor will “B” ever equal “C” ALONE. But rather, it will ALWAYS take “A” + “B” TOGETHER to equal “C”.
Term “A”
So what is term “A” in the equation? In other words, what is YOUR part in obtaining salvation (eternal life)? Are you ready? It is to REPENT OF SIN! But what is that exactly? How do you do it? Well, here’s the definition of the original Greek word “metanoeō” which was translated “repent” in our English New Testament Bibles: to repent, to change any or all of the elements composing one’s life: attitude, thoughts, and behaviors concerning the demands of God for right living. Wow! So what are the “demands of God for RIGHT living”? Friend, they are the 10 Love Commandments! “Right living” is accomplished ONLY by obeying (keeping) God’s 10 Love Commandments. So that’s it. That’s your part, my part, and any man or woman who has ever lived(s) part in obtaining eternal life. Nothing else you do, know, or believe will get you to heaven, ONLY your REPENTANCE.
Furthermore, repentance is NOT a one time decision. Rather, it is a continual lifestyle of love (keeping of God’s 10 Love Commandments) that if one ever willingly turns away from doing, will NOT allow their soul to obtain eternal life (salvation). In other words, our part in obtaining salvation is a continual way, a path, a battle, a fight, and it only ends when we breathe our last breath on Earth. Understand? Here now are some Scripture verses that utilize the word “salvation” that are talking about YOUR duty in the Salvation Equation.
“My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart” (Psalms 7:10)
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit” (Psalms 34:18)
“Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes” (Psalms 119:155)
“Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments” (Psalms 119:166)
“I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight” (Psalms 119:174)
“Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive” (Ezekiel 18:27)
“And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house” (Luke 19:8-9)
“And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (II Thessalonians 2:10-12)
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation.” (II Corinthians 7:10)
“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” (Philippians 2:12)
Term “B”
Alright, so what is term “B” in the Salvation Equation? In other words, what is GOD’S part in you obtaining salvation (eternal life)? It is to FORGIVE YOUR SINS! But why is that necessary? How does that work? This, my friend, is where the story of what Jesus Christ did on the cross comes in. Listen, every one of us has sinned (disobeyed one of God’s 10 Love Commandments) at one time or another in our life, and even just one little sin has a consequence (or a price to be paid) under God’s righteous law. Do you know what that price is? It’s eternal spiritual death in hell. This is why the Apostle Paul wrote: “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Consequently, since we’ve ALL sinned at least once, we ALL deserve death. None of us deserve to be “saved” from hell and obtain eternal life in heaven. So how are any of us ever going to obtain it? Well, this is where God comes in!
God devised an amazing plan of salvation for mankind. Almost 4,000 years into the history of mankind, He chose to impregnate a virgin woman on Earth with His righteous Holy Spirit seed, and she gave birth to a sinless child who would grow up to be the Savior of mankind’s souls. This child was/is Christ Jesus, our Lord. He never sinned once, which means he always kept God’s 10 Love Commandments perfectly. Consequently, he would NEVER have had to face the “death sentence” that comes from sinning. He was righteous. He was pure. But in his perfect love for us, he chose to endure the “spiritual death penalty” that comes from sinning. He went through hell for you and me! He was tortured, beat, bruised, and finally crucified on a cross. His righteous soul’s blood was shed. His soul tasted sin’s consequence (separation from God – pain, sorrow, fear, and work) and he cried out: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). He was then taken down of the cross, buried, and after three days and nights in the ground … he arose alive from the grave!
So what does this mean for you and me? It means Jesus Christ paid a death sentence for sin he didn’t owe. And how does that help us? Well, the judge of all mankind, God, looks at it like this … He is willingly to accept Jesus’ gift (his sinless death) IN PLACE of the death you and I should pay for the sins we’ve committed. Can you imagine that? Amazing, isn’t it? And IF that “divine transfer” happens for you one day, it will mean this … God has officially “forgiven you of the penalty for your sins” and consequently, you will NOT be sentenced to death in hell, but rather you will be “saved” (obtain salvation) and enter into the joys of eternal life in heaven. “He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the issues from death” (Psalms 68:20)
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King (Jesus) cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass” (Zechariah 9:9)
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11)
“And he (Simeon) came by the Spirit into the temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation” (Luke 2:27-30)
“For God sent not his Son (Jesus) into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17)
“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Thessalonians 5:9)
“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope” (I Timothy 1:1)
“Therefore I (Paul) endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (II Timothy 2:10)
“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:28)
“And we have seen and do testify that the Father (God) sent the Son (Jesus) to be the Saviour of the world” (I John 4:14)
